Insurance, health administration and claims work all share one shape: a file arrives, information is gathered from several places, a decision is made against a rule set, and a letter goes out. Most of that is gathering and assembly. The decision is the small part and it is the only part that needs a person.

That shape is the most rewarding thing to automate in an Ontario business and the most dangerous to get wrong, because the output affects somebody. The rule I hold to is that a model may assemble a draft and may never issue a decision. A person approves, and the approval is recorded. Anyone selling you a fully autonomous claims decision is selling you an appeal.

Practically this is workflow automation with a drafting component, in the $6,000 to $12,000 band, because it always touches four or five systems and it always carries personal information.

Food manufacturing

The London food processors I have looked at have the opposite problem: the production data is excellent and the office runs on email. Recall traceability, customer specification sheets and supplier certificates are usually managed in a shared drive by one person who remembers where everything is. That is a document management and retrieval problem, and it is one of the few cases where a grounded answer agent genuinely earns its cost, because the questions arrive constantly and the answers exist.
